James has published a book titled The Return of Russia: From Yeltsin to Putin, which explores the story of a vengeful Kremlin.

A British researcher and journalist, James examines how the West underestimated the deep sense of humiliation in Russia following the collapse of the Soviet Union. He has reported from Russia on three occasions: first as a correspondent for Reuters in the early 1990s, and later for the BBC from 1997 to 2000 and again from 2006 to 2009.
