Mansion Tax on Houses that cost over Two Million Pounds

A visit to Holland Park and Notting Hill in London to hear local residents’ views on the Labour government’s proposed “mansion tax,” which is expected to come into force in 2028.

The “mansion tax” is the commonly used nickname for its official title, the High Value Council Tax Surcharge (HVCTS). Under the scheme, homeowners would pay between £2,500 and £7,500 per year, depending on the value of their property.

Critics see the tax as another example of the centre-left government targeting the wealthy. Across Britain, there is growing discussion of a potential millionaire exodus, as high-net-worth individuals consider relocating to countries with lower tax burdens.

Concerns over further taxation have also dampened the housing market, with prices for high-end properties already showing signs of decline.
