Day 23 | 17 August 2025 | Walking the Camino Francés
From Boadilla del Camino to Villalcázar de Sirga | 19.4 km 12 miles
When we left our hotel at 05:30, we were amazed to see the medieval Rollo standing in the small plaza now beautifully lit and magnificent against the darkness. A Rollo is a column that signifies a town’s legal and administrative independence. These columns marked jurisdictional boundaries and served as a public symbol of a town’s right to administer its own justice, often including punishments such as whipping.
The route to Frómista was pleasantly flat and followed the canal Canal de Castilla. We crossed the canal by walking over a weir and entered Frómista, where morning coffee and tortilla awaited us.
Today’s stage mainly followed a main road, but we chose the scenic route suggested in our guidebook, which took us along a tree-lined riverside path. We were so glad we did – the shade made a huge difference in the 38°C heat.
Villalcázar was a wonderful village dominated by the 13th-century Templar church of Santa María, which holds the tombs of nobles and royalty.
