Day 42 | 8 October 2015 | Walking the Camino Francés
From O Pedrouzo to Santiago de Compostela | 25km 15.5 miles
Today was the last day, and it felt strange that it was so – both welcome and not welcome at the same time.
We left O Pedrouzo early and with the help of head torches we walked in the darkness through a dense wood of tall eucalyptus trees. Strangely, we were alone; no other pilgrims were out walking. Perhaps a well earned lie-in on the final day.
We weren’t entirely without company, though. An owl called out above us – my bird-finder app identified it as a tawny owl. There was a full moon overhead and when we came to a clearing I took several handheld photos on my iPhone and, surprisingly, one turned out just fine – the one you can see. How it managed that I still don’t quite understand; my professional gear would have struggled to capture the same image handheld.
About twenty minutes later, still in the dark, other pilgrims began to pass us. I managed to capture a photograph I was happy with as one pilgrim was briefly caught in the machinery lights of some forest workers – it was the last picture that I took on the Camino.
A few hours later we walked onto the Plaza de Obradoiro in Santiago de Compostela, the grand historic square before the cathedral.
We had walked the Camino.
