Camino Portugués Photo Journal along The Portuguese Way to Santiago
While walking the Camino Francés we met several pilgrims who highly recommended walking the Camino Portugués – also called the Portuguese Way. Before we had even finished that journey, we had already decided that in 2026 we would walk the full Camino Portuguese, starting in Lisbon to Porto continuing all the way to Santiago de Compostela.
Walking the Camino Portuguese from Lisbon to Porto
There is just one Camino route from Lisbon to Porto, known as the Central Route, covering 388.9 km | 241.6 miles.
Walking the Camino Portuguese from Porto to Santiago
From Porto, things become a little more complicated, as there are four different Camino routes to choose from for the final stretch to Santiago de Compostela. If you stick with the Central Route, the remaining distance is 251.2 km | 156 miles.
Top tip: Buy A Pilgrim’s Guide to the Camino Portugués by John Brierley. It is an outstanding resource that describes in detail all the route options – it is well worth getting the full version rather than just the map-only edition.
Our plan is to continue using the Central Route, but also to dip into (excuse the pun) the Coastal Route and the Senda Litoral at times.
It would be nice to mix things up and experience the Camino from different perspectives, from quiet inland trails to long stretches beside the Atlantic Ocean.
If you were to follow our route stages the distance from Porto to Santiago is 230.4 km | 143.1 miles.
The Photo Journal section from Porto to Santiago de Compostela will be posted here in May 2027.
