Day 22 | 16 August 2025 | Walking the Camino Francés
From Castrojeriz del Camino to Boadilla del Camino | 19.1 km 11.9 miles
Another early morning start of 05:15 and like yesterday morning it would be a long wait for the much needed morning coffee- fix that would have to wait until the next village Itero de la Vega that was a walk of 11 km.
Leaving Castrojeriz we went immediately uphill for 1 km – and then an even steeper slope with a 12% graduation for anther 2.5 km to take us back on the Meseta at a height of 900m at Alto de Mostelares.
We did this walk in the dark using our head torches – looking backdown the track we could see dozens of small moving lights below us as other pilgrims were up early and were on the trail.
Nothing like a strenuous walk first thing in the morning! We went back down again at an even steeper angle.
As we walked over the Puente de Itero (Itero bridge) spanning the River Pisuerga the sun rose and I waited a couple of minutes so that I would have the sun’s glow across the water. I took a lot of exposures and thought this one was the best of the bunch. Happy.
The coffee place in Itero de la Vega was shut – we were too early! Disaster.
Fortunately, the rest of the stage was a pleasure: flat, easy walking along an earth track. Nice.
