Day 12 | 6 August 2025 | Walking the Camino Francés
From Logroño to Navarette | 9.4 km 3.4 miles
It was another short walk today – the third day of the heatwave at 34°C. As we wandered through the quiet, early-morning streets of Logroño, we were struck by the city’s beautiful atmosphere – the warm yellow glow of the street lights contrasting with the dark blue of the sunrise sky.
Before long, we reached Parque de la Grajera (Grajera Park), a peaceful area with a large reservoir lake surrounded by forest.
We were greeted by a friendly red squirrel who scampered up to us with unmistakable purpose. Its eager expression made it clear it wasn’t interested in us, but rather in what we might be carrying. As it happened, I had a small bag of mixed nuts. With an outstretched hand, I offered it some and it took them without hesitation.
About a hundred metres further along the path, we came across a sign warning that CCTV was being used and there was a €750 fine for feeding the animals. Oh no, really?
I couldn’t help but laugh and think that our shrewd squirrel knew exactly what it was doing – meeting people before they saw the sign. Whilst crossing a small wooden bridge we saw beneath us a shoal of Carp in the lake – we didn’t feed them.
Our reward for reaching Navarrete was café con leche y bizcocho de limón (Coffee with milk, and a slice of lemon sponge cake).
