Day 26 | 20 August 2025 Walking the Camino Francés
From Sahagún to El Burgo Ranero | 18.7 km 11.6 miles
We left Sahagún early, and it was wonderful to see several buildings illuminated in the pre-dawn darkness. The entrance to the Monasterio de Santa Cruz (Monastery of Santa Cruz), looked especially magnificent, as did the historic Puente Canto (Canto bridge), originally a Roman crossing.
Our first coffee stop was at the modern-looking Albergue La Perala, its bright green lawn standing out strikingly against the surrounding dried yellow wheat fields. Just 7 km later, we paused for our second coffee fix in Bercianos del Real Camino at a cafe with colourful painted wooden barrels.
It was a perfect day for walking – clear blue skies, a gentle breeze, and a comfortable 25°C. The path was lined with trees that offered welcome shade, and now, more than three weeks into the Camino, we were a lot fitter. Distances of up to 28 km no longer felt like a challenge.
When we arrived at our accommodation, Pensión La Costa del Adobe we were greeted by our charming hostess, Maria. She explained that our room would be ready in about twenty minutes and asked if we might like to wait in the garden with some ice-cold beers. We answered “yes” in unison.
Drinking our beers, we looked through the menu that was filled with wonderful dishes like Sopa de Pollo de Casa, Maria’s homemade chicken soup. We were disappointed to discover the restaurant was closed that evening and ended up eating in an empty, nondescript bar that served equally nondescript food.
However the next morning at breakfast, Maria redeemed everything with Panceta bacon and eggs on toast – quite simply the best breakfast we had and were to have on the entire Camino.
