Day 11 | 5 August 2025 | Walking the Camino Francés
From Viana to Logroño | 9.4 km 5.8 miles
Today’s stage was a short walk into Logroño, planned both as an easier day and to help us adjust to the heat wave beginning to affect northern Spain. We also began our new routine of setting out early, between 06:00 and 06:30.
Not long after leaving Viana, we crossed out of Navarre and into La Rioja, an autonomous community and province renowned as Spain’s most prestigious wine region. Approaching Logroño, we passed beautiful beds of roses known as the Rosa del Camino de Santiago (The St. James Way Rose), created and donated by Michel Adam for the city.
In Logroño, we said farewell to the last of our second group of friends we had met along the way.
Throughout the Camino, we found ourselves joining many groups of fellow pilgrims we would share the trail with for about a week, bumping into each other at the same accommodations, chatting for a few hours on the path, or sharing meals together.
These circles of friends were always shifting: faster walkers drifted ahead and formed new circles, while others caught up from behind to take their place. The camaraderie on the Camino is remarkable – warm, spontaneous, and genuinely special.
