Day 17 | 11 August 2025 | Walking the Camino Francés
From Villambista to Villafranca Montes De Oca | 5.4 km 3.4 miles
We only walked a short distance today – partly to take a break from the heat, but mainly to plan our stages so we could tackle tomorrow’s 1,120 metre mountain ascent and descend the other side in a single stage.
We spent the rest of the day relaxing at Hotel San Antón Abad, a former pilgrim hospital built in 1377 and beautifully renovated to preserve its original character. The hotel was wonderful and a perfect place to rest. The only strange detail was the bar and café, which had an African theme, complete with stuffed animals on the walls. It felt oddly out of place on the Camino. I even asked a couple of staff members if there was any historical connection to Africa, but no one seemed to know.
